The present article considers fundamental changes in modern technology and science, cultural and social spheres reflected in a wide range of new lexical units which enrich the English vocabulary on a daily basis. The switch towards online communication made by representatives of different professions, including presidents and other prominent politicians, celebrities, different social and age groups, etc has spurred the appearance of numerous neologisms in all realms of life as they characterise new trends in people’s self-representation online. The image online users create in various social networks is becoming extremely important for certain categories of people, especially business people, teenagers and young adults. Such digital self-representation combines both verbal and non-verbal means of communication, in particular, photographs have become an extremely important tool of portraying oneself in social media. The current research focuses on the neologisms denoting various types of selfies that are shared in social networks, modern devices that are used to take them, new names of online users, the phenomena which characterize addiction to social networks and cyberspace etc. The neologisms under consideration are classified according to word-forming mechanisms. Different approaches to defining neologisms are considered as well and the difference between neologisms and nonce-formations is studied. Finally, conclusions are drawn and suggestions for further linguistic investigations are made.
