Enhancing efficiency of language education in university dual degree programmes

This article is motivated by new challenges and perspectives in dual degree programmes that can provide students an opportunity in expending the boundaries of their professional horizons, developing their professional expertise and simultaneously enhancing professional competencies in English. Previous research has shown that dual degree programmes promote academic mobility; they provide such benefits as a standardized exchange and certification, an opportunity to obtain a foreign diploma. Despite a large number of studies describing the system of dual education and its benefits, the article examines the insufficiently studied issues that need clarity and new scientific research. Our qualitative methodology included, firstly, interviews with students and teachers, secondly, classroom observations, and, finally, the Survey conducted in February 2021.
The Survey conducted in Chernivtsi University was aimed to better understand students’ willingness and ability for undertaking dual degree programmes and to prospectively gain an insight into their career expectations. The main purpose of the carried-out research was to analyse tendencies in choice of major combinations for university dual degree programmes, highlight the pre-requisites and suggest ways for improving the effectiveness of overall and field-specific language education for students seeking dual degrees. The findings of the research illustrate that English-Ukrainian Translation & Law was the most popular combination among the students undertaking dual degree programmes. As far as English-Ukrainian Translation is the major which is most frequently combined with the simultaneous study for another degree it is extremely important to renovate ways to enhance the level of teaching languages and translation and meet the expectations and needs of learners.
