The modernization of the educational process entails the need for the emergence of new learning systems. In this regard, many universities are moving from a traditional to an innovative system, in particular, a modular rating system. Tyumen Industrial University is one of them. The purpose of this article is to describe the modular-rating system operating in the branch of Tyumen Industrial University in Surgut. The authors highlighted the main disadvantages of the traditional education system: passive work, lack of reading professional literature and speaking skills, etc. As well as the disadvantages of traditional control of students' knowledge, including the lack of stimulation of the systematic work of students, the possibility of obtaining the same assessment by students, the dependence of the final assessment on many random factors and lack of competitive effect. The article discusses the positive and negative aspects of the rating system for monitoring students' knowledge. The rating systems for assessing knowledge used in the branch of Tyumen Industrial University in Surgut in the disciplines "Mathematics", "Physics", " Oil and Gas Chemistry" for a semester for students in the direction "Oil and Gas Business" (academic bachelor's degree).
