In recent decades, researchers have been increasingly interested in the interpenetration of phonology and phonetics. Particularly trending is the idea of the systemic conditionality of certain phonetic processes in speech as embodied in modern concepts. There is, moreover, an increased consensus in the field that phonological conceptsare useful only whencorresponding to experimentally established linguistic realities; phonological concepts which hold true when faced with concrete examples. This articles explores such phonological concepts further, as they operate in languagewithinthe framework of the linguistic positions of the Shcherba school, which is characterized by the search for points of contact between phonetic and phonological, psychological and social. The main purpose of the article is to reveal the norms and variability of phonetic devices in language. This topic is particularly relevant,as there are few studies on the features of allophonic change in the spontaneous monologue of literary style, despite the fact that the laws of variability have been known since theearly era of linguistic studies.
