Abdulfattah Omar
doi: 10.14744/alrj.2020.97769  Pages 1 - 6
Numerous studies have evaluated digital localization quality in different languages, including Chinese, German, Russian, and Spanish. Consensus has largely been reached that language clarity and accessibility, as well as linguistic consistency, are key factors for the success and reliability of the localization of software applications and websites. Although there is a sizable body of literature on the evaluation of localization quality, there is very little on Arabic localization and accessibility to Arab users. This study seeks to address this gap in the literature through an evaluation of the Arabic localization of learning management systems (LMSs). The development of digital transformation processes, and recently the outbreak of COVID-19, have resulted in LMSs being integrated in teaching and learning practices. It is thus important to evaluate their translation quality and linguistic consistency, these being essential for their success and reliability. The study conducted a survey to explore users’ perceptions concerning the translated content of LMSs. The results indicate that ambiguity and language inconsistency are the main problems with different LMSs, including Blackboard, Zoom, and Microsoft Teams. This is attributed to different reasons, including the peculiar linguistic features of Arabic, ineffective management of terminology, and a lack of consideration of dialectal differences and variations. Localization developers thus need to address the linguistic challenges and peculiarities of Arabic, including its morphology and writing system. Dialectal variations also need to be considered. The contents of an LMS should be adapted so that they are attractive to target users and easy to use. In this regard, localization developers should recruit the right people for language and translation tasks and jobs. Translators also need to realize the differences between localization and translation. The language should be accessible and easy to understand. Finally, the management of terminology and standardization should be considered.

doi: 10.14744/alrj.2020.79037  Pages 7 - 18
This article is an investigation of the grammatical category of negation in diachrony. The issues of negation in logic and linguistics, negation as a grammatical category on the morphological and syntactic levels are highlighted. The authors state that in broad semantic terms negation can be expressed in morphologic and syntactic ways in natural language. The means of expressing negation constitute a hierarchically organized system of heterogeneous language units combined with a similar semantic function. Based on the theoretical premises, it is explained that negation as a grammatical category can be realized on both morphological and syntactic levels. On the morphological level negative affixes paradigm and separate parts of speech are taken into consideration, while on the syntactic level the whole negative sentence that includes one or more than one negator is observed. Negation is expressed by means of affixes that have explicative and implicative components in their meaning. Authentic affixes preserve the semantic meaning of the words they etymologically derive from, giving the word they join to, a special shade of negation. The main source of enrichment of the negative affixes paradigm and their new meaning are affixes borrowed from other languages. The study of the category of negation on different levels in diachronic aspect can help to observe the development of particular parts of speech, which can express negation, and serve as a base for further studies of negation in the different discourses and communicative situations. The prospects of further study in this field lie in investigating negation in different discourses and communicative situations, that would be essential for researching communicative strategies in anthropocentric paradigm.

3.Lip service or real offer? Investigating responses to compliments by Egyptian EFL learners
Hasnaa Abdelreheem
doi: 10.14744/alrj.2020.65902  Pages 19 - 35
This paper is an attempt to investigate Compliment Responses (CRs) produced by Egyptian EFL learners through the use of Discourse Completion Task (DCT) as a data collection method. The aim is to gain an insight into the politeness strategies employed by Egyptian Arabic native speakers by shedding light on how young Egyptian EFL learners react when receiving compliments in English and in Egyptian Arabic. Comprehension is a skill that requires higher EFL proficiency levels so that the students can understand the questions properly, demonstrate a certain level of pragmatic familiarity in the target language, and thus eliminate language barriers that can strongly influence the research results. Hence, to guarantee a certain level of familiarity with English, the sample selected for this small-scale study comprises 30 responses by 15 English-majored university students (11 females and 4 males). The DCT consisted of 6 different compliment situations related to appearance, possession and performance/ability, and participants were asked to respond to the compliments as they would in real life. Responses were categorised according to the following strategies: thanking, wishing, rejecting, doubting, topic shifting, explaining, encouraging, offering the complimented object or help, returning the compliment, joking, expressing gladness, agreeing, combining two or more strategies as well as combining strategies with non-verbal responses. The data reflected some social-cultural norms of the Egyptian society. Gender-based differences in CRs have also been highlighted, and classroom implications that could apply to EFL teaching in the Egyptian context are proposed.

Selma Korkmaz
doi: 10.14744/alrj.2020.55823  Pages 36 - 42
Books contribute to the increase of children's vocabulary and creative thinking skills, and consequently to the development of four basic language skills - speaking, reading, writing and listening. Therefore, books that will positively affect the development of children should have certain features both in form and content. However, since children are not conscious of discovering the features that should be in a good book, parents have a critical role to play. The aim of this study is to determine how conscious parents are about books that are extremely effective in children's development and which criteria they consider when choosing children's books. For this purpose, the working group consists of 50 parents who reside in the TRNC and whose children are studying at primary school. Data were collected using an interview form consisting of 6 questions in order to obtain the opinions of the parents about the book selection. Content analysis was also used during the analysis of the data obtained; the data were divided into certain categories and themes which are shown in percentages and frequencies. Based on the findings, it can be said that although the majority of parents seem to be conscious about the choice of books, they have incomplete information on some issues.

Danqi Zhang
doi: 10.14744/alrj.2020.47135  Pages 54 - 67
In the light of critical discourse analysis (CDA) and the classic categorization of hedges, this study analyzes the pragmatic functions of hedges in the transcripts of the 2016 US presidential debates between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. The results show that among the four types of hedges, plausibility shields and adaptors are frequently used, whereas rounders and attribution shields are rarely employed by the candidates. Trump uses significantly more approximators than Clinton, while Clinton uses shields more frequently than her rival. On the whole, Trump uses hedges more frequently than Clinton in the debates. In such political communication, hedges have multiple pragmatic functions, namely emphasizing proposition, establishing common ground, increasing credibility, avoiding responsibility, and showing politeness. It is found that Trump tends to use hedges to emphasize propositions, while Clinton often employs hedges to show politeness and closeness with the voters. This use of hedges reveals the different ideologies of each candidate.

Momen Yaseen Mamin
doi: 10.14744/alrj.2020.37167  Pages 68 - 75
In the field of second language acquisition, the issue of code-switching or L1 use in relation to second language teaching and learning has been regarded as a hot debate for several decades. As a result, several studies have been conducted so as to support the idea that L1 should be implemented for L2 teaching and learning, while another studies provided evidence to the disadvantages caused by such implementing of L1. Since, it is widely acknowledged that the notion of ‘belief’ is one of the most significant factors that influence L2 teaching and learning, the current study aims at comparing teachers` beliefs towards using L1 in language classrooms in two different Arab countries Libya and Iraqi Kurdistan. The current study tries to shed light on whether Libyan EFL teachers and Kurdish EFL teachers have similar or different beliefs towards the use of L1 in their language classrooms and to find out what beliefs these groups have. Teachers’ beliefs questionnaire has been used for data collection. 40 EFL teachers from the two contexts participated in the study. The findings showed that significant differences were found between the two EFL teachers in terms of their beliefs towards the use of L1 for Subject access, Classroom management, and CS for interpersonal relations. However, there were no significant differences between the two groups of teachers in relation to teachers` personal.

9.A Sociolinguistic Analysis of Alienation in Fadia Faqir's My Name is Salma
Ahmed Ben Amara, Abdulfattah Omar
doi: 10.14744/alrj.2020.29494  Pages 76 - 83
The theme of alienation has been central to a significant number of literary studies in general and Anglophone Arab literature in particular. Different approaches have been used to explore this theme including feminism, postcolonial theory, and psychoanalytic criticism. These approaches have for the most part focused on the aesthetic values of the literary works, often at the expanse of the intercultural aspect of texts and how participants express themselves and being expressed. Despite the significance of sociopragmatic analysis in exploring such cross-cultural issues such as feminism, gender roles, and alienation, it has not received the attention it deserves in literary studies. The present study proposes to address this gap by offering a socio-pragmatic reading of Fadia Faqir’s 2007 novel My Name is Salma. Attention will be given to religious beliefs and social norms as expressed by the characters in the novel and the crucial role they play in interpersonal conflicts and the anxieties of alienation and exile in the novel in question. This study focuses on the concepts of home, exile, alienation and their relations to the quest for identity in the text by using a socio-pragmatic approach in order to show how the stifled and fragmented voices of characters are expressed. These concepts are closely related to the psychological conflicts and profoundly impacted by the individual immigrant's experience, and by the multicultural setting in which the subject finds himself or herself. The results of the study are expected to highlight the relevance of the socio-pragmatic method in the analysis and interpretation of literary texts.

This article discusses the speech portrait of Xi Jinping and its features, as well as their translation transformations into Russian. In the course of the work, the authors considered theoretical scientific works on the speech portrait. The translation transformations and mechanisms used in the process of interpreting the text were analyzed, which allowed us to conclude that it is necessary to recreate the information provided in the translation process most fully. Based on the research done, the classification of translation transformations was determined, on the basis of which the translations of Xi Jinping's speeches were analyzed. During the work, various speeches and reports of the president of the People’s Republic of China from 2013 to 2020 were analyzed. When considering the speeches of Xi Jinping, were revealed the distinguishing features of his speech portrait, the widespread use of metaphors, chengyu, yanyu, quotations during his speeches. A study of the translations of speeches by the head of the PRC made it possible to consider the features of the speech portrait of a linguistic personality in two different languages, to analyze the use by translators of certain translational transformations during the interpretation of the text. The study also shows how, when translating Xi Jinping's reports and public speeches into Russian, the historical and cultural context is often not enough to accurately convey the meaning of the features of his speeches.

doi: 10.14744/alrj.2021.32559  Pages 219 - 222
The article analyzes the military lexicography of the USSR period. We found that the main attention in the science of this period was given to the creation of translated dictionaries, bilingual and multilingual. It is noted that this is connected with the history of the USSR, with the difficult international situation in which the country was constantly located. Military conflicts, as well as military cooperation, stimulate the creation of translated dictionaries, which are necessary both for the organization of international communication and for the training of cadets in military schools. Less active in Soviet times were published monolingual dictionaries of military vocabulary, addressed primarily to those who study the basics of military affairs. The publication of encyclopedic dictionaries, addressed to a wide range of public interested in military affairs, containing information about military history and personalities, was also inferior to bilingual translated lexicography; the first such dictionary was published only in 1984. We drew a conclusion about the need to preserve the traditions of Soviet lexicography, whose representatives made a great contribution to the development of military dictionaries. Also, it is important to develop military lexicography in those areas that in the Soviet period were less developed – the field of military encyclopedic dictionaries and the field of monolingual military dictionaries.
